FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

If your question is not here, the configuration reference is more detailed than this page, and the case studies cover real-world results.

Is Kane's Arch a Linux distribution?

No. It is a configuration for stock Arch Linux — a package set, a handful of config files and an install script. There is no fork, no custom repository and no separate ISO. You install Arch the normal way and apply this on top, which also means you can undo it.

Will it make my computer faster?

On modern hardware, not noticeably for most work. Boot is quicker and idle memory is far lower, but application performance is broadly unchanged and video playback is worse. The gains are in predictability and in how much of the system you can actually account for — not raw speed.

Why disable swap? Isn't that dangerous?

It is a deliberate trade. With swap, an out-of-memory condition degrades slowly and is hard to diagnose; without it, the OOM killer fires within about a second and the cause is in the journal immediately. On a machine with 16 GiB this is comfortable. Under 8 GiB it is not recommended, and one of the case studies covers a machine where it had to be reversed.

Can I run it as a daily driver?

Some people do, but go in knowing the limitations: no hardware video acceleration, visible screen tearing during fast motion, no hibernate, and Chromium needs a flag to start at all. Try it on a spare machine before committing.

Is this affiliated with the Arch Linux project?

No. Kane's Arch is an unofficial third-party configuration with no connection to, or endorsement from, Arch Linux or its maintainers. Bugs found here should not be reported to Arch.
